At some point in their lives, everyone feels the agony of losing a loved one.

But, the loss of a specific loved one can have a greater impact on us than we expect.

Have you ever had a dream about someone who is no longer alive? You may not have considered the significance of their appearance in your dreams.

Everyone experiences grief differently after the death of a loved one. Several people cry uncontrollably, while others remain mute and withdraw inward.

Some folks pretend nothing happened or try not to think about it. Yet, many people share the tradition of dreaming about deceased loved ones.

What we dream about at night is determined by our subconscious, and if you’ve ever dreamed about a deceased person, it could mean anything.

So, can we communicate with the dead in our dreams?

According to Patrick McNamara, associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at Boston University School, visitation dreams are what people have when they see visions of the departed.

As McNamara describes it, “nightmares of the bereaved when the dead appear to the bereaved in dreams and appear to be very much alive.”

On the website Psychology Today, the 67-year-old neuroscientist frequently posts as Dream Catcher.

McNamara has published extensively on dream interpretation. And he says that there is a rational explanation for visitation dreams in general.

They aid in the recovery from emotional trauma.

He writes about a dream he experienced after his parents died. After having one himself, McNamara maintained that this form of dream, known as a “visitation dream,” was evidence of survival after physical death.

“Now, if I, an individual who studied dreams with a skeptical scientific mindset, couldn’t shake the belief that I had just talked with my dead parents,” McNamara writes, “how much greater must be the conviction of someone with a less suspicious attitude to dreams than me?”

There are more people interested in dreams like these than simply Patrick McNamara, and a number of studies have been done to understand more about them.

In 2014, the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care released a study that looked at the impact of grieving dreams.

“Dreams of the deceased occur regularly, can be very important, and can aid in the healing process following a loss,” the study stated.

“previous memories or experiences, the deceased free of disease, memories of the deceased’s illness or time of death, the deceased in the hereafter appearing well, contented, and at peace, as well as the departed sending a message” were among the themes in the dreams.

A group of Canadian researchers analyzed the dreams of 76 middle-aged persons who had just suffered a big loss in 2016.

67.1% of those who had just lost a loved one indicated that dreaming about the deceased reinforced their trust in an afterlife.

Seventy percent reported having visits from the dead in their dreams, and 71 percent reported that dreaming about the dead improved their connection to the departed.

Jennifer E. Shorter, a psychologist at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California, has also investigated the connections between our waking and sleeping lives.

According to the author of “Visitation Dreams in Grieving Individuals: A Phenomenological Study into the Relationship Between Dreams and the Grieving,” there is no way to know how often visitation dreams are.

Yet, this could happen immediately after death or years later. According to her studies, a visitation dream has four distinct characteristics:

  1. In a visitation dream, the deceased appear as they did in real life, but they are either healthier or younger.
  2. The departed frequently expresses how they are today, for example, that they are fine.
  3. The significance of the dream is perceived less as a physical presence and more as a psychic one.
  4. Typically, the dream state is tranquil and well-structured, verging on harmony.
