Pope Leo a Strong Message

President Donald Trump recently unveiled an initiative called the “Board of Peace.” As part of this initiative, he extended an invitation to world leaders, including Pope Leo. However, Pope Leo turned down the invitation in a rather strong manner.

When Donald Trump introduced the “Board of Peace,” he envisioned it as a way to promote peace in areas riddled with conflict, such as Gaza. But the reception from global players was mixed, which might not have been what Trump had anticipated.

Becoming a permanent member of this board comes at a hefty price—$1 billion. Several countries like Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine have opted out of the offer. On the flip side, countries including Israel, Argentina, Russia, Hungary, and Saudi Arabia decided to join Trump’s peace initiative.

When Trump officially launched this plan in January, an invitation was also sent to Pope Leo, the revered leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Now, months later, Pope Leo and the Vatican have expressed their stance on the matter, and it’s clear-cut.

Pope Leo’s Bold Rejection

Initially, the Vatican held back on making a public statement. In January, it was noted that Pope Leo needed some time to consider Trump’s proposal.

Today, the Vatican has decisively communicated its decision to reject participation in Trump’s plan. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a key figure in the Vatican’s diplomatic engagements, conveyed that Pope Leo believes conflicts such as those in Gaza should be managed by the United Nations rather than by a board dominated by any single nation.

According to reports from the Independent, a representative speaking on behalf of the Vatican shared with journalists: “This administration is endeavoring to enforce our country’s laws humanely, acting in accordance with our obligations to citizens residing here.”

Although Pope Leo himself hasn’t personally detailed reasons for the denial, his decision is consistent with his prior declarations on important international concerns. The Pope has been a vocal proponent of peace, advocating for human rights and addressing the plight of immigrants and refugees. He has also consistently highlighted that freedom and dignity must not be compromised in the quest for upholding human rights.
