In a rare and heartfelt message, First Lady Melania Trump has expressed her thoughts on the recent and tragic shooting of Alex Pretti by ICE and Border Patrol agents. The incident occurred in Minnesota this past weekend and has sparked national attention.
It was reported that Alex Pretti was pepper-sprayed, restrained, and subsequently shot on January 7. This devastating event follows closely behind the sorrowful death of Renee Good, further intensifying the public’s reaction.
The incident has stirred significant controversy. Many videos from the scene paint a different picture than initially suggested by the Department of Homeland Security. These videos seem to challenge claims that Pretti posed a genuine threat. Though Pretti was carrying a firearm, evidence suggests it remained holstered until confiscated by an officer. Only after being disarmed was the 37-year-old shot.
Despite this, figures like White House advisor Stephen Miller and former CBP commander Gregory Bovino have labeled Pretti a โdomestic terroristโ, echoing actions seen during the aftermath of Renee Good’s death.
Outrage following Prettiโs death has prompted the White House to reassess their initial stance, suggesting that Pretti’s actions led to his own demise. However, public sentiment remains heated.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described Pretti’s passing as a โtragedyโ, and President Donald Trump has indicated his administration will scrutinize the incident thoroughly.
Melania Trump has also emphasized the need for calm and cooperation. โWe need to unify. Iโm calling for unity. Yesterday, my husband, the president, had a great discussion with the governor and mayor to ensure peace without resorting to violence,โ she remarked, adding, โI’m against violence, so if you protest, protest in peace.โ
The future of Minneapolis and Minnesota as a whole is uncertain as President Trump announced the deployment of Tom Homan, known as the โborder tsarโ, to lead Operation Metro Surge, addressing the ongoing situation and reporting directly to the president.
The Pretti family’s reaction to the statements from the government has been one of anger and sadness. In a moving statement, they shared: โAlex was a person destined to make a positive impact. Sadly, he will no longer witness the changes he aspired to make. We don’t use the word ‘hero’ lightly, but in his final moments, he was trying to safeguard a woman.โ
They further condemned the portrayal of their son by officials, stating, โThe vile lies about Alex by the administration are unacceptable. Alex was not holding a gun. He was defending himself and a woman, with his empty hands raised whilst being attacked.โ
What do you think about Melania Trumpโs appeal for unity? Is unity achievable in today’s politically charged atmosphere?
