This week has been an especially challenging one for the Kennedy family as they mourn the heartbreaking loss of Tatiana Schlossberg, the beloved granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy.
Sadly, during this time of grief, former President Donald Trump made headlines with social media statements that many found lacked sensitivity and empathy.
Tatiana Schlossberg, who bravely battled acute myeloid leukemia, passed away on December 30, 2024. She was the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter to an American icon.
Her family shared the heartbreaking news with a touching message, reflecting the deep sorrow felt at her passing: “Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts.” This message included signatures from her family, illustrating their unity in this tremendous loss.
While support poured in for the Kennedy family from across the globe, Donald Trump—well-known for his long-standing disagreements with the Kennedys—took a different approach. On his social media platform, Truth Social, he shared several posts critical of the family.
The tensions between Trump and the Kennedy family have been escalating recently. Not long ago, Trump suggested renaming the famed Kennedy Center as the Trump-Kennedy Center.
This suggestion stirred controversy, as the Kennedy Center serves as a tribute to President Kennedy, honoring his contributions and preserving his legacy following his tragic assassination in 1963.

Joe Kennedy III, the grandnephew of President Kennedy, firmly opposed Trump’s suggestion, asserting the importance of the Kennedy Center as a “living memorial.”
He defended its name by saying, “The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law. It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”
Trump seemed undeterred by this defense and shared opinions from his followers disparaging the Kennedy family’s relationship with the center.
One post he shared accused: “The Kennedy family have LONG neglected the Kennedy Center, by the way. They don’t raise money for it. They never show up. And the only Kennedy who has been there recently is a member of Trump’s cabinet.”

In another comment shared by Trump, a follower remarked, “The Trumps have always been supporters of the arts. The Kennedys are supporters of the Kennedys.” Although Trump did not mention Tatiana specifically, the timing of his posts in the wake of her death drew widespread criticism.
This led to a significant backlash, with many people online expressing their outrage at Trump’s insensitivity. A social media user challenged the timing of his comments by saying, “Just hours after Caroline Kennedy’s daughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, tragically died, Donald Trump has launched a series of social media attacks against her family. RETWEET if you stand with @CarolineKennedy against these despicable attacks!”
In the media, CNN reporter Jake Tapper also criticized the posts, referring to them as a “stunning display of cruelty” and dismissing them as “social media garbage.”
These events have raised significant questions about respect and dignity, especially during times of personal loss. The controversy surrounding Trump’s posts highlights the ongoing conversation about public figures’ conduct in sensitive times.
