Donald Trump is taking a stronger stance on immigration, and many senators and congress members are following suit. Among them, Republican Senator Bernie Moreno is planning to introduce a law aimed at ending dual citizenship. Surprisingly, this move might impact two prominent figures residing in the White House: Melania and Barron Trump.
Earlier this week, Ohio’s Republican Senator Bernie Moreno announced his intention to propose new legislation. He elaborated on Fox News that this bill is designed to eliminate dual citizenship by requiring individuals to show “exclusive allegiance” to the United States of America.
Moreno, who hails from Colombia, has already relinquished his Colombian citizenship.
“One of the greatest honors of my life occurred when I became an American citizen at the age of 18,” Moreno shared with Fox. “It was a privilege to pledge an Oath of Allegiance solely to the United States of America. Holding American citizenship is a distinguished honor and a privilege. If one wishes to be an American โ it’s all or nothing,” he stated emphatically. “It is time we bring dual citizenship to an end.”
This proposal is in line with Trumpโs ongoing efforts to intensify US immigration regulations. Currently, the law permits Americans to maintain dual citizenship and does not obligate individuals to favor one country over another.
How the New Legislation Might Affect Melania and Barron Trump
Moreno’s proposed legislation, dubbed the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, mandates that individuals opt for US citizenship as their sole allegiance. This aims to eliminate “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties,” as the bill specifies.
If passed, Americans with dual citizenship would have one year to renounce their foreign citizenship or their US citizenship. Failing to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in the automatic revocation of their US citizenship.
This legislation could have a broad impact, including on Barron and Melania Trump, who are both dual citizens of the US and Slovenia.
Barron, the youngest son of Donald Trump, has forged a deep connection with his mother’s homeland over the years, particularly through his Slovenian grandparents. As a child, Barron even spoke with a Slovenian accent.
Melania Trump holds the unique distinction of being the only first lady who became a naturalized U.S. citizen and the first born outside of the US. She achieved citizenship in July 2006 by obtaining an EB-1 visa, which is allocated for individuals with “extraordinary ability” and “sustained national and international acclaim.”
The Personal Impact of Citizenship Choices
In a poignant detail about their family life, Melania lost her mother, Amalija, last year. During a discussion with Fox News last September, Melania shared that her mother had a very close relationship with Barron. She fondly recounted how Amalija had moved to the United States to be near Barron.
Melania reflected, “Her life in Slovenia was incredible. Once Barron was born, he became her focus. In many ways, she was like a second mother to him, especially given my busy schedule at the White House. Their bond was unparalleled,” Melania shared.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken. However, it appears quite likely that Barron and Melania would choose to retain their US citizenship if forced to decide.
