Former President Donald Trump recently made headlines with a bold and controversial statement directed at a group of Democratic veterans. These veterans have been outspoken about encouraging military personnel to resist illegal orders. Among these veterans is Sen. Mark Kelly, who has not stayed silent in response.
Sen. Mark Kelly, a key figure among the Democratic veterans challenging Trump, has encouraged military members to stand firm against any illegal directives. Trump’s reaction, alongside War Secretary Pete Hegseth, prompted the Pentagon to initiate an inquiry into potential breaches of military code.
The Pentagon released a statement expressing concerns that Kelly’s comments might damage the โloyalty, morale, or good order and disciplineโ within the armed forces. They referred to federal laws that prohibit such actions and hinted at possible outcomes like recalling attendees to active duty for legal proceedings or other administrative penalties.
Trump didn’t hesitate to voice his opinions on social media, accusing Sen. Mark Kelly and others of engaging in โseditious behavior.โ He went as far as to suggest their execution, which he later defended as not being an actual threat. In his characteristic style, Trump exclaimed, โItโs called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL,โ and insisted, โEach one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand โ We wonโt have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET. President DJT.โ
Sen. Mark Kelly’s Response to Trump’s Bold Accusation
Sen. Kelly from Arizona responded to Trump’s controversial remarks during a press conference by reflecting on his lifelong service to America, contrasting it with Trump’s public career record.
Kelly highlighted his service, saying, โIn 1991, while Donald Trump was dealing with financial troubles at the Taj Mahal Casino, I was flying missions over Iraq and Kuwait.
In 2001, following the collapse of the Twin Towers, when Trump claimed to own the tallest building now standing in Manhattan, I was on a space mission carrying flags in memory of 9/11 victims.โ
He further reminisced, โIn 2003, as Trump was exchanging pleasantries with the notorious Jeffrey Epstein, I was part of the team first on the scene after the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. Then in 2011, as Trump was hosting reality shows and pushing baseless conspiracies against President Barack Obama, I was at my wifeโs side while she was recovering from a critical head injury.โ
Standing Up to Bullying
Kelly went on to accuse the former president of systematically trying to silence his adversaries through intimidation.
โThroughout his career, including in business, on TV, and in politics, Trump has relied on one tactic: bullying opponents into silence. He did it while failing as a casino owner, leaving contractors unpaid. He portrayed it as a reality star renowned for firing people indiscriminately. And he has persistently applied this tactic as a President, intimidating without consideration for Americans’ rights or welfare,โ Kelly asserted.
