Few people take the time to get to know a homeless person and research their biography before asking them how they ended up homeless.

Yet, a Los Angeles hero got to know the homeless woman sleeping on the street outside his house and did a wonderful thing to aid her.

Irene “Smokie” McGee had been living on the streets of south Los Angeles since losing her home and husband ten years ago.

The 60-year-old spent her nights sleeping on the ground and her days gathering recycling to sell so she could buy food.

She spent the most of her evenings camped out in front of an apartment complex, where one of the residents became acquainted with her and learned her story.

“She’s a human being, a 60-year-old mother and grandmother sleeping on the mud; it’s simply not right,” local Elvis Summers said.

Elvis and Irene became friends, and Elvis decided to build Irene a house since he couldn’t stand seeing her sleeping on the streets every night.

The generous neighbor built her a house out of $500 in wood he had purchased, siding and roofing supplied by a nearby firm, and his own construction abilities.

“All I wanted to do was make something safe and secure enough for her to be warm and comfortable.”

After five days, Irene had a roof over her head.

‘I slept for half the day.’
“It felt so lovely, I was so comfortable, I think I must have slept half the day,” Irene remarked of her first night in her tiny 3.5 x 8 ft apartment.
