The woman was walking through the forest gathering firewood, but she tried not to venture too deep into the underbrush. A few times she had frozen in place, startled by the appearance of a wolf with the same light cream mark on its chest. Emma immediately understood who it was, so she tried to act calm but cautiousโafter all, it was still a wild animal.
Maybe he was friendly with her neighbor, but he didnโt know Emma, and the young nurse was still afraid of him. One day in January, during the harshest part of winter, Emma went out as usual to collect small branches. Once she had gathered enough, the gray wolf appeared in front of her as if from nowhere.
โOh hey, fluffy tail,โ Emma said softly and stopped, expecting the wolf to just continue on its way. But he didnโt. Instead, he started making short dashes toward her, then backing away.
It looked like he wanted Emma to follow him.
โYou want me to come with you?โ she asked, and the wolf dropped to his front paws eagerly, as if saying โyes.โ
โWellโฆ okay, your call,โ Emma whispered and began walking carefully through the deep snow.
The cold was brutal, and the nurse had to pull her old padded coat tighter around herself. She followed the wolf farther and farther into the woods until they reached a wide clearing. At first, Emma couldnโt even understand what she was looking at.
Pieces of metal and equipment were scattered everywhere. Near one chunk, she spotted the oval cockpit of a helicopter and what looked like part of a rotor blade. It was a crashed chopper.
โOh my God,โ Emma gasped and ran straight toward the cockpit. When she looked inside, she froze.
Inside the cockpit was a man, motionless, wrapped in a coarse military blanket. His pale face was partly covered by an unkempt beard, and there was a deep gash above his left eyebrow. At first glance, Emma thought he was deadโbut then she saw his chest rising and falling faintly. He was breathing. Barely, but breathing.
โYouโre alive!โ she exclaimed, her heart pounding.
The man opened his eyes with great effort. They were a striking deep blue, standing out against his pale skin and lips, which were tinged blue from the cold.
โHelp,โ he whispered, his voice so weak Emma could barely hear it.
Her nurse instincts kicked in immediately. She assessed the cockpit quicklyโno obvious fuel leaks, no risk of explosion, and it looked like the helicopter had been there a while, judging by the snow partially covering it.
โIโm going to get you out of here,โ she said firmly. โBut I need your help. Can you move your legs?โ
The man winced in pain but managed to shift both legs slightly. That was a good signโhis spine was likely intact.
โYour arms?โ
He raised his right hand, but the left stayed limp.
โThink itโs broken,โ he muttered.
Emma struggled to open the cockpit door, which was stuck under a pile of snow. When she did, icy air rushed in, and the man began shivering more violently.
โWe need to get you somewhere warm. My house isnโt far. Can you hold onto me?โ
He nodded faintly. With tremendous effort, Emma helped pull him out. The man was taller than her and clearly weak, but still heavy. As she got him on his feet, he staggered dangerously.
โWhatโs your name?โ she asked, trying to keep him conscious as they began their slow trek through the snow.
โAndrew,โ he answered after a long pause, like he was struggling to remember. โAndrew Vaughn.โ
โIโm Emma. Emma Reed. Iโm a nurse, so youโre in good hands.โ
Andrew tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace.
โLucky me.โ
The gray wolf followed them from the edge of the clearing, staying a few yards to their right. Every so often, he disappeared between trees, only to reappear up ahead, as if checking the path.
โYour friend… seems really protective,โ Andrew said, nodding toward the wolf.
Emma smiled. โHeโs not really my friend. He belongs to my neighbor, Miss Anna. My only neighbor within ten kilometers. People think sheโs crazy for taming a wolf, but sheโs just a lonely old woman with a special gift for animals.โ
โAnd yetโฆ he led you to me.โ
Emma looked at the wolf again, realizing it was true.
โYeah. Itโs likeโฆ he knew.โ
They continued in silence, each step through the snow getting harder. Andrew leaned more heavily on her, and Emma felt her strength dwindling. Her house was still far, and the cold was becoming unbearable. Suddenly, Andrew stumbled and fell, pulling Emma down into the snow with him.
โI canโt go on,โ he whispered. โLeave me here. Save yourself.โ
โNo way,โ she said, trying to lift him. โI didnโt find you just to let you die in the snow.โ
At that moment, the wolf came closer than ever. He looked directly into Emmaโs eyes, then turned and looked off into the woods, as if trying to guide them again.
โI think he wants us to follow him,โ Emma said, lifting Andrew to his feet.
The wolf led them off the path and through the trees. After about fifteen minutes, they reached a small clearing with a rustic cabin.
โItโs the rangerโs cabin!โ Emma exclaimed. โI didnโt know it was this close.โ
With her last bit of strength, she dragged Andrew inside. The cabin was basic but well-stockedโwood stove, bed, canned food, water, and a first-aid kit. Emma got the fire going and helped Andrew onto the bed.
โLetโs see what weโve got here,โ she said, starting to treat his wounds.
Besides the broken arm, Andrew had a deep head cut, multiple bruises, and the beginnings of frostbite. His body temperature was dangerously low.
โHow long were you out there?โ she asked, cleaning the head wound.
โNot sure. Two days? Maybe three?โ
โWhy hasnโt anyone found you?โ
Andrew closed his eyes for a moment. โTheyโre probably lookingโฆ in the wrong place. I wasnโt on my planned route.โ
Emma raised an eyebrow as she wrapped the bandage.
โHow did you end up out here, in the middle of nowhere?โ
โItโs a long story.โ
โWeโve got time,โ she said, glancing at the window where snow was falling harder.
Andrew sighed. โIโm a military pilot. On a recon mission, I stumbled onto something I wasnโt supposed to see. A coded transmission. Coordinates, transport details. At first, I ignored it, but then I recognized the name of an operation thatโs only whispered aboutโWhite Wolf.โ
โWhat is โWhite Wolfโ?โ
โAn experimental program. Theyโre using wild animals in special missions. Genetic modifications. Control chips.โ
Emma immediately thought of the gray wolf with the cream patch.
โYou think heโs one of them?โ
โMaybe. But if he is, I donโt think heโs under control anymore. He wouldnโt help someone like me if he was.โ
โSomeone like you?โ
โI ran. I found out too much. My superiors called me in for a โdebriefing.โ But Iโve seen what happens to people who know too muchโโaccidents,โ disappearances. So I took the helicopter and ran. Headed west. Then I crashed.โ
Emma finished bandaging his head and made a makeshift sling for his arm.
โWhat now?โ
โNo idea. Theyโre probably looking. If they find meโโ
โThey wonโt,โ Emma said firmly. โNo one comes out here. And right now, no one can. Youโre safe.โ
When she was done, she made hot tea from dried herbs in the cabin. She handed him a cup and sat beside him.
โWhy did you come out here?โ Andrew asked. โTo a place this isolated. Alone.โ
Emma looked into her tea. โAfter my divorceโฆ I needed to run, too. Not from the military. Justโฆ from everything.โ
โWhat happened?โ
โClassic story. My husband had another family. In another city. Kids. When I found out, everything collapsed. So I took the first job I couldโclinic nurse, rural post, 30 kilometers from here. The house came with the job. No one else wanted it.โ
Andrew gently touched her hand. โIโm sorry.โ
โDonโt be. Itโs better this way. Iโve learned to appreciate the silence. And nowโฆ here I am. A nurse in the middle of a military conspiracy. With a fugitive pilot and a genetically altered wolf.โ
They both laughedโbriefly, but genuinely.
Outside, the blizzard intensified, wrapping the cabin in silence and snow. Emma stoked the fire again. Somewhere in the dark, the gray wolf stood watch, keeping them safe from whatever lurked beyond.
โDo you think he has a name?โ Andrew asked, watching the wolfโs shadow by the window.
โMiss Anna calls him Gray. She says he told her his real nameโฆ but itโs a secret between them.โ
Andrew smiled. โI think I like Miss Anna.โ
โIโll take you to her tomorrow, if the storm lets up. She has a ton of herbal remedies. Maybe even something for your arm. And if Gray really is from that programโฆ she needs to know.โ
โWhy would she trust me?โ
Emma looked him in the eye.
โBecause you did the right thing. And because Gray chose you. He guarded you for days, then came for me. That means something.โ
That night, as the storm howled and snow piled high, Emma stayed by Andrewโs side, checking his temperature, making sure he was stable. Questions circled in her mindโWho was this man really? What was White Wolf? And maybe most of allโwhat role was she meant to play in this strange new story?
Just before dawn, as the blizzard eased, Emma finally fell asleep with her head resting on the edge of Andrewโs bed. She didnโt see the wolf step closer to the window, watching them with eyes far too human. And she didnโt see the faint glow that pulsed from the cream mark on his chestโsoft, like a heartbeat.
A new day was beginning, and with it, a truth that would change Emmaโs life forever.
