In a devastating incident, the 3-year-old son of a Delaware firefighter lost his life after being struck by a car while attending a memorial walk. The walk was organized to honor three firefighters who had tragically lost their lives in a fire four years ago. The incident occurred on South Madison Street in Wilmington, Delaware.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the child was hit by a vehicle driven by an off-duty firefighter who was attempting to park and participate in the memorial event. The toddler was immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries.

Not only is this tragedy heartbreaking for the firefighter’s family, but it also adds to the deep sorrow felt by the Wilmington Fire Department. The fire department had already been mourning the loss of three firefighters – Lt. Jerry Fickes, Capt. Chris Leach, and Lt. Ardythe Hope – who lost their lives in a structure fire on the same day in 2016.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki expressed his profound sadness over the incident, especially on a day that marked the seventh anniversary of the loss of the three heroes. He emphasized that the entire city shares in the grief and extends its deepest condolences to the grieving family. Mayor Purzycki hoped that the family would find some solace in knowing that the love and prayers of the community are with them during this incredibly difficult time.

The investigation into the fatal accident is still ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. This heart-wrenching incident serves as a tragic reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of exercising caution even in the most unexpected moments.
