Wildlife officials said that the man was attacked on Sunday in Port Charlotte next to a pond behind Banditos Bar.

Officials claim that a guy in Florida lost an arm after being attacked by an alligator behind a neighborhood pub.

According to a press release from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission that PEOPLE acquired, the 23-year-old, who has not been officially identified by officials, was bitten on Sunday in Port Charlotte near a pond behind Banditos Bar.

According to officials, the man had “significant injuries” as a result of the assault.
According to The Daily Sun, the victim was sent to Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers.

According to Todd Dunn, a spokesman for Charlotte County Fire and EMS, his arm was severed at the hospital, as reported by the Associated Press. Uncertainty surrounds his current state.

A request for comment from PEOPLE was not immediately met by Charlotte County Fire and EMS.

Manny Hidalgo, a customer at the bar, told the Sun that he heard the man screaming and immediately ran outside to investigate. At that point, the victim could be seen “yelling and swimming toward the shoreline.”

The Cape Coral man claimed, “I ran and dragged him up onto the sand.” It was dark outside, so I was afraid to approach the lake.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a nuisance alligator trapper was dispatched to the incident and removed a 10.5-foot alligator from the property. After that, the alligator was “humanely killed.”

A probe into the incident is still ongoing.

As the alligator mating season goes on, Hidalgo told the Sun that he hopes people continue to be “aware of their surroundings.” He continued, “This is Florida, and there are predators.”
