The Metropolitan Police Department says a man was apprehended outside Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night, just four days before King Charles’ coronation.

On Tuesday evening, a man was apprehended outside Buckingham Palace after police said he discharged shotgun ammunition into the palace grounds.

According to the palace, King Charles and Queen Camilla were not at Buckingham Palace at the time of the event.

The unidentified individual was apprehended by Metropolitan Police at 7 p.m. According to a news release, authorities used a “controlled explosion” to destroy a “suspicious bag” found in the man’s hands.

Authorities said in the announcement that they “quickly” captured the man “after he approached the gates of Buckingham Palace and threw a number of items – suspected to be shotgun cartridges – into the Palace grounds.”

“These have been recovered and will be taken for specialist examination,” according to the press release. “The man was arrested on suspicion of having an offensive weapon.”

According to Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald, “there have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.”

Police said the area was blocked off after his arrest, and the controlled explosion was conducted “as a precaution.”

The event occurred four days before King Charles’ coronation, which will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

Buckingham Palace did not respond further.
