Tucker Carlson, one of the most popular US TV hosts, has announced his departure from Fox News.

Fox said in a statement that the network and Mr Carlson had agreed to “part ways.”

His farewell TV show aired on Friday, April 21, according to the statement. His primetime slot will now be hosted by a rotating cast of temporary hosts until a permanent successor is identified.

The two-paragraph statement provided no explanation for the decision.

The announcement comes only days after Fox News agreed to settle a slander lawsuit filed by voting equipment manufacturer Dominion over its coverage of the 2020 presidential election.

Dominion said in the complaint that Fox affected its company by disseminating false assertions that its computers were rigged against Donald Trump.

The case spurred the release of text texts revealing Mr Carlson’s private opinions in contrast to his on-air output.

His show, which aired between 20:00 and 21:00 EST, was highlighted numerous times in court records by Dominion’s attorneys in their assertion that some of its material was defamatory.

The week of March 27 to April 2, Mr. Carlson’s show was the second-highest rated on American cable network TV.
