Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a New York grand jury on around 30 felony offenses connected to alleged document fraud, according to NBC.

The indictment, approved on Thursday, is still sealed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate in 2024, is due to be charged in Manhattan court on Tuesday.

The charge is believed to be related to Trump’s repayment of his then-lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen for a $130,000 hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election.

Trump’s payments to Cohen for that reason were classified as “legal expenditures” by the Trump Organization.

Misclassifying business costs is a misdemeanor in New York. If done to conceal another crime, this can be considered a felony.

Stephanie Clifford Daniels, whose official name is Daniels, was paid to remain silent about her claim that she had sex with Trump in 2006. He denies her claim.

Trump is the first U.S. president, current or former, to face criminal charges.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll issued this week, a majority of Americans say Trump should be barred from running for President if he is charged with a crime.

Yet, there is no law prohibiting Trump from running for president while facing criminal charges.
