UK Prime Minister’s Response to Trump’s Comments About London Mayor

During a visit from former U.S. President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a somewhat awkward encounter.

While in Scotland, Trump made a blunt remark about Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, labeling him as a “n@sty person.”

Trump’s visit to the UK aimed to cover significant international issues, such as trade tariffs, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the Gaza crisis. In his interactions, Trump expressed a liking for Starmer, Terming him as “someone he liked.” Furthermore, he also showed admiration for Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform UK party.

“I like both men,” Trump expressed. “Keir seems like a great guy, and so does Nigel. I donโ€™t really follow your politics, but one seems a little liberal and the other a little conservative. Still, theyโ€™re both solid fellows.”

Trump’s tone shifted drastically when he addressed his views on Sadiq Khan, who has been London’s Mayor since 2016 and is a member of the Labour Party. Without mincing words, Trump commented, “Iโ€™m not a fan of your mayor. I believe he’s done a terrible job; quite the n@sty person.”

This placed Starmer in a tricky situation, given his friendship with Khan. Attempting to defuse the atmosphere, Starmer chuckled awkwardly before replying to Trump, “He’s a friend of mine, actually.” Yet, Trump remained firm. “I still think he’s done a terrible job,” he added. “Nonetheless, Iโ€™d certainly visit London.”

According to Starmer, Trump’s visit to the UK stands out as “very special and unprecedented,” featuring several unique elements not traditionally seen in state visits.

In a break from customary procedures, Trump’s visit did not include a speech in Parliament, a point that Farage critiqued. However, Trump seemed unfazed by this decision. “If Keir wants me to speak in Parliament, I’ll be happy to do itโ€”whether now or later on,” he remarked.

Throughout his stay, Trump continuously emphasized his personal connections. “Nigel is a friend. Keir is a friend,” he reiterated.

In the wake of Trump’s outspoken criticism, Sadiq Khanโ€™s spokesperson extended a welcoming message to Trump, praising London as “the greatest city in the world.”

The spokesperson emphasized London’s diversity as a major asset, stating it makes the city “stronger, not weaker; richer, not poorer.” They also noted that during Trump’s presidency, there was a noticeable rise in the number of Americans seeking British citizenship, perhaps reflecting London’s appeal in contrast to Trump’s governance style.

Despite the main agenda focusing on pressing global concerns, Trump’s candid remarks about Khan managed to eclipse other discussions. This served as a vivid reminder of the delicate diplomatic balance world leaders must often maintain when hosting the often-outspoken former U.S. president.
