The Man Who Sought the Finest

The story begins with a certain dapper gentleman, seemingly in his late forties or early fifties, arriving at the doorstep of a grand establishment. This place, renowned for its elegance and reputation, opened its door to reveal a well-dressed man, looking every inch the part of sophistication and charm.

The woman in charge, a lady known for her keen eye and understanding of people, greeted him politely, “How may I assist you today?” she questioned with a welcoming smile.

With a nod and a poised demeanor, the man responded, “I wish to see Penny.” His request was clear, leaving no room for doubt.

At this, the housekeeper hesitated slightly, knowing Penny was one of their most esteemed and costly assets. “Sir, Penny is among our most priced ladies. Perhaps you would consider another option?” she suggested tactfully, hoping to steer him in a different direction.

Yet the man’s resolve was firm. “I must see Penny,” he stated without wavering.

As fate would have it, Penny herself appeared just then, an air of luxury and allure surrounding her. She informed the gentleman, with no trace of hesitation, that her fee was $1,000 per engagement.

The man, not missing a beat, produced ten crisp one-hundred dollar bills, handing them over with the ease of someone accustomed to such transactions. Penny accepted and led him upstairs, where they spent the hour as she had promised.

Once the time elapsed, the man left the establishment calmly, his purpose seemingly fulfilled.

The next evening, the same gentleman arrived once more, asking to see Penny again. His presence caused a ripple of surprise among the staff, as few had the means to return for a second evening with Penny.

She reiterated her service fee, ensuring there was no misunderstanding—still the same $1,000.

Again, without any hesitation, the man handed over the money, and they proceeded upstairs as before. Afterward, he left just as calmly as the previous night.

The establishment was abuzz the third night when he returned yet again, as this gentleman seemed unfazed by the steep expense for consecutive evenings. Penny, intrigued by the man’s dedication, spent the hour with him once more. Following their time together, Penny’s curiosity got the best of her, prompting her to inquire.

“No one has ever visited me three nights in a row,” she mused aloud, her interest piqued. “Might I ask where you are from?” she inquired, seeking to understand her mysterious patron.

“South Carolina,” he replied simply, a hint of intimacy now in their exchange.

Her eyes widened slightly in recognition, “Is that so? I have family there,” she revealed.

With a knowing smile, the man responded, “I am aware. Your father passed away, and I am the attorney for your sister.” He paused, allowing the weight of his words to settle. “She asked me to deliver your $3,000 inheritance.”

In this story lies a lesson written in life’s peculiar truths: Certain as the inevitability of death, the inescapability of taxes, is the notion of being unexpectedly outwitted by a lawyer.
