Michael J. Fox’s Journey with Parkinson’s: A 30-Year Battle
For over three decades, Michael J. Fox has courageously faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, a journey marked by resilience and advocacy. The beloved actor has become synonymous with determination, serving as an inspiration for many as he navigates life with this relentless condition.
Since his initial diagnosis in the early ’90s, Fox has made it his mission to shed light on Parkinson’s, striving to advance research and increase understanding worldwide. Recently, in a candid conversation, the ‘Back to the Future’ star shared some difficult truths about his ongoing struggle and health.
Now 61, Fox has always maintained an optimistic outlook, yet has consistently been open about the toll Parkinson’s takes on his day-to-day life. In a poignant recent interview, he openly discussed the waning of his health and his candid views on his own lifespan.
During a heartfelt discussion, Fox conveyed how challenging living with Parkinson’s has become. He bravely expressed, “I’m not gonna lie. It’s gettin’ hard, it’s gettin’ harder. It’s gettin’ tougher.”
Remarkably honest, he reflected on the disease’s impact, stating, “You don’t die from Parkinson’s. You die with Parkinson’s. I’ve been thinking about the mortality of it… I’m not gonna be 80. I’m not gonna be 80.”
Fox’s enduring battle with the neurological disorder was notably diagnosed after he noticed a tremor in his pinkie finger in 1991. Now, as anticipation builds for his upcoming documentary, “Still,” more light is shed on his enduring fight over the past three decades.
Within the documentary, he admits, “I’m in intense pain. Each tremor is like a seismic jolt,” a description that captures the invisible nature of the struggle he’s been enduring.
Providing further insight into his condition, he explained, “It’s not so much pain from the movement, but from the not moving. It’s when you freeze, and in that freezing that not-movement becomes infused with all this energy and it becomes this burning, impending thing that never happens.”
Despite these significant challenges, Fox refuses to let despair take hold. With characteristic resilience, he assures, “I’ve broken my hand, my elbow, my humerus, my other humerus, my shoulder, my face, and some other… too. And all that stuff is amplified by the electricity of the tremors. So, yes, it hurts a lot. But what you learn is that nobody gives a… It’s just life. It doesn’t matter. You suck it up and you move on. And there might be a story to tell in it. But only that. There’s no chit that you can present to a window for a refund.”
Fox’s determination to find brightness in adversity has been unwavering. Even after his official retirement in 2021 due to declining health, he emphasizes the importance of focusing on life’s positives rather than dwelling on its challenges.
As he put it, “The depression is [not] so deep that I’m going to injure myself… it always comes back to a place where I go, ‘Well, there’s more to celebrate in my life than there is to mourn.’ The pain speaks for itself. You either tolerate it or you don’t. And I’m not going anywhere.”
