President-elect Donald Trump has disclosed a notable accord with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. She reportedly committed to taking immediate measures to tackle the illegal migration into the United States.
This unexpected pledge might signal a significant shift in dealing with the long-standing border issue, a central theme in Trump’s campaign promises.
On Truth Social, Trump declared, “Mexico has agreed to stop illegal crossings at our Southern Border starting immediately. This is a tremendous step toward ending the unlawful invasion of our country. Thank you to President Sheinbaum!” He went on to elaborate on their discussions in a subsequent post.
Trump shared, “I had an exceptional conversation with Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico’s new president. She’s committed to preventing migration through Mexico into the U.S., effectively securing the border.
We also addressed combating the flow of drugs into America and reducing their domestic use. It was a highly productive dialogue!”
President Sheinbaum confirmed the talks and detailed her administration’s strategies for managing migration internally. “I had a positive discussion with President Trump,” she commented on X. “I assured him that migrant caravans are being intercepted and managed well before reaching the northern border.”
Should Mexico uphold these commitments, there could be a significant reduction in the number of migrants entering the U.S., a situation the country has faced with nearly 11 million border encounters since 2021, according to federal data.
Beyond border security, Trump announced a campaign against fentanyl abuse in the U.S. “We’ll launch a major initiative to inform Americans about the dangers of fentanyl,” he stated. “Millions of lives have been ruined by this deadly drug.”
Even though Sheinbaum initially criticized Trump’s tariff threats, she later described their conversation as “constructive” and “encouraging,” indicating a potential for stronger collaboration in the future.
