Karoline Leavitt’s departure as White House press secretary was officially attributed to her desire to spend more time with her family. But a video recorded only hours before she stepped down has fueled a very different conversation online.
The footage appears to show Leavitt taking part in an uncomfortable exchange aboard Marine One with President Donald Trump and his longtime aide, Natalie Harp. Although the recording does not establish why Leavitt resigned—or even what the full conversation concerned—her expressions and gestures quickly became the subject of intense speculation.
Now, a professional lip reader has offered an interpretation of what may have been said during those closely watched moments.
A video recorded before Leavitt’s departure raises questions
Leavitt left her position in mid-August, explaining that she wanted to devote more time to her family. Almost immediately, however, social media users began proposing alternative explanations for her decision.
Those theories intensified after footage reportedly filmed just hours before the announcement began circulating online.
In the video, Leavitt is seated across from Trump after boarding Marine One. Natalie Harp is also present and appears to be directly involved in the conversation.
At one point, Leavitt seems to address Harp before yawning and gesturing in her direction. Both women are subsequently seen looking at their phones, while Leavitt appears unusually tense to some viewers.
The brief recording offered little context, but that did not prevent it from spreading rapidly across social media.
Online viewers offer their own interpretations
One X user who shared the clip questioned whether the timing of the exchange and Leavitt’s departure might be connected.
“In a LEAKED video from last night, she looks visibly isolated during a tense Marine One exchange with Trump and another woman. Hours later, she’s out. Is the WH covering up something?”
Another account went further, claiming:
“A tense exchange between Karoline Leavitt and Natalie Harp and Donald Trump on Marine One last night. Today, Karoline Leavitt was fired.”
A third user focused on Leavitt’s apparent reaction during the recording:
“Karoline Leavitt seen looking visibly worried. Unaware the camera is recording. She urgently gets on her phone after the signal. Then today she is out. What is really happening?”
These comments reflect speculation from social media users, not confirmed information. There is currently no publicly established evidence that Leavitt was fired or that the conversation aboard Marine One prompted her departure.
What a lip reader believes was said
Lip reader Nicola Hickling examined the footage and shared her interpretation with the Express. According to Hickling, Leavitt appeared to direct her first question toward Harp rather than Trump.
She reportedly asked:
“Are you sure?”
Harp allegedly responded:
“We don’t like it. There’s going to be an announcement as soon as possible, okay?”
Following that exchange, Leavitt appeared to sigh and rub her arms. She then pointed toward Harp while continuing to speak, but part of the conversation could not be interpreted because Leavitt leaned forward and obscured her mouth.
Moments later, Harp reportedly said:
“This has now happened twice.”
Leavitt appeared to answer using several hand gestures before leaning back, folding her arms and turning her attention toward Trump.
Harp then raised two fingers and allegedly added:
“Twice, as you know.”
The interpretation has only deepened the mystery because the footage provides no clear indication of what had supposedly happened twice or what announcement the two women may have been discussing.
Lip-reading from video is not definitive, particularly when camera angles, distance and obstructed facial movements make words difficult to identify. The interpretation therefore does not prove that the exchange concerned Leavitt’s resignation.
Natalie Harp faces separate scrutiny
As questions surrounding the Marine One video circulated, Harp became the focus of another story involving personal letters she allegedly wrote to Trump.
The letters, reportedly written during the 2023 presidential campaign, were published by the Daily Beast. In one of them, Harp allegedly told Trump:
“You’re all that matters to me,”
She also reportedly described herself as:
“unworthy”
The reported correspondence dates from around the time Harp accompanied Trump on a golf trip to Scotland and Ireland. Harp was 31 at the time, while Trump was 76.
Harp joined Trump’s political operation in 2022 and has remained a familiar presence around him since his return to the White House.
Her responsibilities have reportedly expanded far beyond those of a conventional political aide. Reports have described her as someone who works late into the night with Trump, assists with his social media posts and communicates with world leaders on his behalf.
She is also said to have a designated chair outside the Oval Office, illustrating how closely she operates within the president’s immediate circle.
What remains unanswered
The Marine One recording has attracted attention because of its timing, but it does not reveal why Leavitt left the White House.
Her departure may have been entirely personal, as she publicly explained. The conversation could also have concerned an unrelated announcement or internal matter.
Neither the footage nor the lip reader’s interpretation confirms that Leavitt argued with Trump, was dismissed from her position or resigned because of Natalie Harp.
For now, the most important question remains unanswered: What announcement were the two women reportedly discussing—and what did Harp mean when she said it had already happened twice.
