World leaders gathered in Evian-les-Bains, France, on Tuesday, June 16, for the first full day of a three-day summit focused on some of the most pressing geopolitical challenges facing the world today. The meeting brings together leaders from the Group of Seven (G7), which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with several invited partner nations and key international figures.

Although Ukraine is not a member of the G7, President Volodymyr Zelensky was invited to participate in the discussions, reflecting the ongoing importance of the war in Ukraine on the global agenda. In addition to Ukraine, partner countries such as Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Korea are also taking part in selected sessions, highlighting the broader international effort to address global instability.
As leaders arrived for one of the working sessions, a brief moment captured on video drew significant attention online. The footage showed U.S. President Donald Trump walking ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as they entered the room. After reaching a large central table, Trump paused momentarily, standing alone and looking around before Macron and Zelensky joined him.
However, the moment that sparked the most discussion occurred shortly afterward, when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen approached the group. She first greeted Trump with a handshake and exchanged a few words before moving on. Moments later, her interaction with Macron appeared noticeably warmer—she smiled, opened her arms, and greeted him with kisses on both cheeks.
Images from the event also showed von der Leyen warmly embracing both Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, further fueling comparisons in how different leaders interacted during the summit.
The summit is taking place against a backdrop of ongoing global tensions, particularly in relation to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. During a bilateral meeting with Macron on Monday, June 15, Trump revealed that he had recently spoken with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Now that this (Iran) is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that,” Trump said, referring to the war in Ukraine.
This statement suggests a potential shift in focus toward resolving the conflict in Eastern Europe following developments in the Middle East. Leaders at the summit are also prioritizing discussions aimed at “ending crises and ensuring stability in the Middle East,” with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates expected to participate in those talks.
Despite the diplomatic setting, the summit comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and several of its traditional allies. Reports indicate that Trump has clashed with multiple world leaders over his decision to launch military action against Iran, as well as over differing approaches to regional security and international cooperation. He has also reportedly warned of potential consequences for allies who do not align with U.S. positions.
Even so, there are clear efforts to find common ground. Leaders are expected to focus on shared concerns such as rising global oil prices and disruptions to shipping routes, particularly through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The stability of this key maritime passage remains critical for global energy markets and international trade.
Ahead of the summit, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Canada issued a joint statement praising what they described as a “diplomatic breakthrough” involving the United States, Iran, and international mediators. The statement emphasized the importance of building on this momentum to achieve lasting stability.
“This is a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilize the global economy,” the statement read. “It is now vital that the detailed negotiations are concluded and this agreement is implemented rapidly and comprehensively. We are ready to support that effort.”
The statement also underscored the urgency of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, stressing its importance for global commerce and energy supply chains.
“The urgent re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation is essential. We are committed to playing our part to achieve this – in accordance with our respective constitutional requirements – including through a strictly defensive and independent mission to reassure commercial shipping and conduct mine clearance operations.”
As the summit continues, leaders face the complex task of balancing national interests with the need for international cooperation. While differences remain, the discussions in Evian-les-Bains represent a critical opportunity to address multiple crises simultaneously and to explore pathways toward greater global stability.
