Barack Obama Attacks Donald Trump Ahead of the Election: “We Have Never Seen a President So Corrupt”

Former U.S. President Barack Obama sharply criticized Donald Trump’s administration during campaign rallies in Cleveland and Detroit, accusing the current president of corruption and mocking his strategy toward Iran.

Ten days before the midterm elections, Obama urged voters to support Democratic candidates and limit the power of the Republican administration.

Barack Obama took part in campaign events on Saturday in support of Democratic candidates, ahead of the November 3 elections that will determine control of the U.S. Congress. The former president held rallies in Cleveland and Detroit, where he criticized the Trump administration’s policies.

In Michigan, Obama campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, who is facing Republican Mike Rogers, a former member of the House of Representatives.

Obama described the election as a “circuit breaker” that could limit what he called the excesses of Trump’s presidency.

“We’ve got to flip that circuit breaker to bring accountability back to this government,” the former president said.

Democrats hope Obama’s presence on the campaign trail will energize the party’s voters, particularly in a closely contested Senate race. Obama, who served as president of the United States from 2009 to 2017, remains one of the Democratic Party’s most popular figures.

In his speech in Michigan, Obama repeated Democrats’ frequent criticisms of the Republican president and members of his party, accusing them of supporting his actions.

“We have never seen a president excel so much at grifting on the taxpayers’ dime,” Obama said, according to Reuters.

The former president also accused Trump of using his office for personal gain, saying his administration had come to represent “a corrupt, incompetent or inactive government.”

The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in August found that 63% of Americans believed the president and his family had improperly profited from cryptocurrency since Trump returned to the White House the previous year. In addition, 69% of respondents believed his policy decisions were influenced by his private business interests.

Barack Obama also challenged the Trump administration’s claims of victory over Iran. The former president argued that the war had given Tehran greater economic influence, as threats to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz had unsettled oil exporters.

“Iran now has veto power over the Strait of Hormuz, where oil passes through on its way to the rest of the world,” Obama said.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic maritime route for international oil shipments, and any disruption to traffic there can affect energy markets.

Barack Obama mocks White House renovations and the Trump administration

The former president also criticized the Republican administration’s priorities, making fun of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for focusing on the appearance and testosterone levels of U.S. service members.

Obama also mocked the White House renovations.

“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory,” the former president said, referring to the decorative style chosen for the presidential residence.

Obama’s remarks come at a pivotal moment in U.S. politics, just ten days before the November 3 midterm elections. The vote will determine the makeup of Congress and affect the Trump administration’s ability to advance its political agenda during the second half of its term.
