I CAME HOME TO A DESTROYED BATHROOM DOOR โ WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT HAPPENED, I FILED FOR DIVORCE
I was away for just two days, but it was enough time for my husband and our daughter to end up with a destroyed bathroom door.
When I got home, neither of them would tell me what happened. All I saw were pieces of wood scattered on the floor, a visibly stressed husband, and an awkward daughter who wouldnโt meet my eyes.
Exhausted from the trip, I decided to talk to my husband in private the next day, assuming my daughter mustโve locked herself in.
Before bed, I took out the trash (of course, my husband had let it pile up) and ran into our next-door neighbor.
โIโm sorry for what happened,โ he said. โI swear I didnโt know who was inside when I slammed the door. That piece ofโฆ should pay for it. If you need someone to talk to, Iโm here.โ
My confusion must have shown because Dave frowned and hesitated.

โWhat are you talking about?โ I asked, feeling floored by his words, the unease in my stomach growing stronger by the second.
Realizing that I didnโt know the truth and he was going to have to tell me, Dave looked away, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
โLook, I wasnโt trying to pry. Lila came running to my house on Saturday, crying, saying something was wrong with her father. She told me she heard strange noises coming from the bathroom and thought he was hurt or something.โ
โShe was so distressed that I didnโt even think about it and rushed over and heard, well, I heard banging and other sounds. I thought something terrible had happened, so I did what I thought was bestโฆ I forced the door open after fetching my ax.โ
I stood there, holding my breath. โWhat did you see, Dave?โ
His eyes met mine, filled with sympathy.
โJohn wasnโt alone. There was a woman in the bathroom with him. They both screamed at me to get out.โ
My blood turned to iceโฆ
My legs wobbled, and I had to grip the side of the trash can to stay upright.
โWhatโฆ what did Lila see?โ
โNothing, thank God. She was too scared to go near the bathroom. I pulled her outside and told her to stay with me until things calmed down.โ Daveโs voice softened. โIโm sorry. I thought you knew and wanted to offer my support.โ
โYou did the right thing, Dave. Thanks for all your help. I will reach out to you if Lila and I need anything.โ
I came back the house, my mind a whirlwind of anger and disbelief! Another WOMAN, in our home, with MY daughter in the next room?! I felt nauseous as I walked through the darkened hallway, each step heavier than the last.
My heart broke when I thought of my sweet seven-year-old panicking after unknowingly discovering that her daddy wasnโt in dangerโฆ he was busy betraying our family.
John was sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the TV as if everything was perfectly normal.
That ALMOST peaceful sight made me snap!

โWho was in our bathroom, John?โ I demanded, my voice shaking with fury.
He didnโt even flinch. His eyes flickered to mine for just a moment before dropping to the floor.
โWhat are you talking about?โ he asked innocently, annoying me further.
โDonโt you DARE lie to me!โ I shouted. โDave told me everything. Who was she?โ
His shoulders slumped. For a moment, he looked like a defeated man, like someone caught in the act with no way out. Then he took a deep breath and said, โSheโsโฆ a friend.โ
โA friend?โ I repeated, disbelief and disgust warring within me!
โYou brought another woman into our home while I was gone? And Lila, our daughter, thought you were in trouble, John! Do you have any idea what you put her through?โ
โIt wasnโt like that!โ he insisted, his voice rising. โIt was justโโ
โI donโt want to hear your excuses!โ I cut him off. โWhat kind of father does that to his daughter? What kind of man does that to his family?โ
He had no answer. The silence stretched between us like a chasm, too deep and too wide to cross. All the love Iโd once felt for him vanished in that moment, replaced by a cold, bitter resolve. The betrayal and the fact that it happened right in our home, with our daughter present, was too much to bear!
I COULDNโT stay. Not after what heโd done. I turned and headed for the stairs, pausing only to look back at him one last time.
โI am going to pack our things,โ I said, my voice steadier than I felt. โIโm taking Lila, and weโre leaving in the morning.โ
John stood up, his face a mask of panic. โPlease, letโs talk about this. I made a mistake, but we can work it outโฆโ
โNo, John. Thereโs no working this out. Youโve broken something that canโt be fixed.โ
With that, I left him standing there, surrounded by the wreckage of what used to be our life together.
The next day, I finished packing a few bags for Lila and myself. Her father tried to talk to me again, his words desperate and pleading, but I didnโt listen. I was DONE listening. Lila deserved better than this, and I was determined to give her a chance at a new beginning, even if it meant tearing our family apart.
Before leaving, I thanked Dave for his honesty with a bottle of whiskey and a simple note: โThank you for being brave enough to tell the truth.โ
After filing for divorce, I sat in the quiet of our temporary apartment, watching Lila play with her toys in the living room. Her smile was back, and she laughed with a lightness that hadnโt been there before. It made me realize that this was the right decision, no matter how painful it was.
It wasnโt the ending I wanted, but at least I now knew who John truly was. He was a man willing to break his family and lie to his daughterโs face. And I knew I couldnโt stay one more minute in that broken home.
Sadly, I am not the only woman whose husband tried to hide their cheating ways. In the following story, the wife thought her marriage with her husband, Bradley, was good until he painted their car a bright color.
That paint job ended up getting him caught!
