Sylvester Stallone, the celebrated actor famous for playing the indomitable Rocky Balboa, recently unveiled a startling revelation about the filming of “Rocky IV.”
In a documentary released on his YouTube channel, Stallone revealed that a dangerous incident occurred during a crucial scene of the movie.
While filming a fight scene with Dolph Lundgren, who took on the role of the fierce Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, Stallone was dealt an alarmingly intense punch to the chest.
Reflecting on the experience, he compared the hit to the jolt of being thrust against a steering wheel in a car collision. Though at first, the pain seemed manageable, Stallone soon realized the injury was far more severe than he had anticipated.
In the documentary, Stallone shared his story, saying, “He pulverized me. I noticed a growing ache in my chest later that evening, although it didn’t strike me as critical at the time.”
The injury turned out to be quite grave, with Stallone’s blood pressure soaring to an alarming level of 260, prompting immediate medical attention.
This incident led to Stallone being rushed from Canada to St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California, where he spent four days in the intensive care unit.
Recalling the hospital stay, Stallone recounted with a touch of humor, “I’m in the intensive care unit, and the only other people here are nuns.” Despite the severity of his condition, Stallone’s resolve did not falter. He firmly stated, “I was then forced to return to the arena and complete the battle.”
Interestingly, the very scene that resulted in Stallone’s injury was included in the film’s final cut. Defending this choice, Stallone remarked, “How could you possibly rule out that scene?” His unwavering dedication to realism and his craft is a testament to his passion for the “Rocky” series.
“Rocky IV” stands as the fourth chapter in the much-loved saga. As the story unfolds, Rocky Balboa, played by Stallone, asserts himself as a worthy world boxing champion.
Upon discovering the tragic loss of his friend Apollo Creed at Drago’s hands, Balboa ventures to the Soviet Union to confront his opponent directly.
Stallone’s revelation about the filming process offers fresh insight into the intensity and realism brought to life in “Rocky IV.” It highlights the incredible lengths to which actors go to breathe life into compelling narratives on the big screen.
Stallone’s unwavering commitment to portraying Rocky Balboa, even amid personal adversity, reflects the tenacity and fighting spirit that is central to the character.
