‘Such A Devastating Loss’: Family Of 3 Dies In Air India Plane Crash After Surprise Trip

A joyful vacation took a tragic turn, as a family’s journey home ended in heartbreak and national sorrow.

On June 12, 2025, a tragic plane accident in India claimed the lives of Akeel Nanabawa, Hannaa Vorajee, and their young daughter Sara Nanabawa.

The family, who hailed from Gloucester, England, were on Air India Flight AI171 when it crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, marking a day of immense grief with the loss of 52 British citizens onboard.

Heading to London Gatwick, the plane faced difficulties climbing and tragically descended into a nearby neighborhood. Among those who perished were the Nanabawas, who were eagerly returning from a surprise visit to India. Their untimely passing sent shockwaves through their family, friends, and local community.

Initially, the relatives expressed their overwhelming sorrow and faced the challenging wait for news about their family. They spoke of still coming to terms with the scale of the disaster’s impact.

Akeel, whose roots were in Newport, South Wales, was fondly remembered for his gentle spirit and how he connected with those around him. Hannaa, cherished for her warmth, was a dedicated partner and mother, and also held a role as director at Peace Inclusion, where she worked on interfaith harmony and education initiatives.

In a heartfelt tribute, Abdullah Samad, imam and school head for Sara, expressed the deep community grief over the loss. He emphasized how the contributions of the family transcended personal connections and were integral to their community’s fabric.

Abdullah shared, “They were very cherished and truly esteemed. Their kindness, generosity, and the joy their daughter brought were gifts to everyone.” He lovingly described Sara as a “little sunshine.”

Many tributes flowed in from community leaders. Neetu Bhardwaj, a temple trustee, voiced how everyone stands united in their grief. “In India, we’re not separated by faith during such times,” she explained, “When they feel pain, we do too.”

Sara’s school acknowledged the shared loss in a poignant statement, expressing the heavy toll on its community and the steps they are beginning to take in collective healing.

Councillor Farzina Hussain from Newport remarked on the community’s shock, fondly recalling Akeel’s compassion and generosity. She noted social media messages and public support as evidence of the deep impression the family left behind.

Tributes continued on social media, where friends and family shared their grief and memories on Akeel’s profile. Anthony Baker expressed his sadness, “Akeel, you were a wonderful person. Thoughts and prayers.” Others, like Sarah Elliott-Moore, couldn’t comprehend the loss, “He was truly a lovely soul.”

Sarah Elliott-Moore responded, “Can’t believe that Ant he was a lovely bloke 😥.”

Niall Yeates added his farewell, “RIP brother. Everyone is heartbroken. Until we meet again.”

Aneesa Singh wrote, “My dear Aku, words fail me. This loss is unimaginable. Thank you for letting us be a part of your life. I’ll treasure our memories forever.”

Expressing her sorrow, Jemma Laine Ward wrote, “Heartbreaking. Rest in peace Akeel and your beautiful family. Your joyous smile will be missed. Sending love to all your friends and family.”

Asif Lala mourned his brother, “This is the worst news. You brought so much happiness to everyone and were a beloved son to your parents. Our time together will never be forgotten.”

Hiren Shah also remembered Akeel warmly, highlighting his influence as a family man who spread joy wherever he went.

A memorial service celebrates the lives of the family, planned at Swindon’s Hindu Temple. People from diverse backgrounds will gather to mourn together. Our heartfelt thoughts are with all those affected.

Sadly, the crash also took away another family. Arjun Patoliya was on the same flight after conducting rites for his late wife. He was returning to London after fulfilling her wish regarding her ashes in Gujarat. His daughters, just four and eight, are now without both parents in mere days.

The Narmada River holds special religious significance, with immersing ashes meant to bring peace to souls.

Air India apologized for the incident and pledged financial compensation, offering each affected family ₹96 lakh, equating to around $116,000, an effort to help the families cope.

The public reaction was intensely felt, with many criticizing the perceived lackluster effort. Comments online reflected discontent, questioning whether financial measures sufficed for preventable loss.

People voiced concerns over compensation, some arguing it inadequately addressed the loss of lives and the suffering of surviving family members. On social media, emotions ran high, with a common sentiment that human lives deserve higher valuation and deeper measures for accountability.

Despite the swift compensation response, some deemed it insubstantial, raising questions regarding the adequacy under existing legal frameworks.

While mourning continues, a desire for accountability and remembrance keeps the community bonded together, honoring those they’ve lost.
