During the 2025 inauguration, while one expert previously commented on Melania Trump’s supposed unhappiness on election night, the atmosphere at the inauguration seemed quite different.

Melania’s attire drew significant attention, particularly one accessory that carried a notable message.
Melania Trump wore a striking hat that seemed to hold a powerful statement, leading to discussions across social media platforms where she faced some mockery.
The Trumps had been gearing up to transition into the White House for several months. On January 20, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States for his second term.
Alongside him were Melania, their son Barron, and the rest of their family. Despite the chilling weather, the Oath of Office was administered indoors in the Capitol Rotunda.

Body language analyst Judi James shared insights with the Mirror, highlighting how Donald seemed attentive to Melania during the event, often holding her hand in a manner reminiscent of a gentleman from a bygone era, exchanging affectionate gestures throughout the day’s proceedings.
The First Lady’s fashion choices consistently capture the public’s interest, and the inauguration was no exception. Judi James elaborated on how Melania’s attire expressed the kind of First Lady persona she aimed to project.
“Her saucer-shaped hat and sharply tailored coat positioned her as Trump’s equal and a woman with serious intentions this time. Her smile beneath her hat was regal and assured, her eyes concealed,” James remarked.

During some socially awkward moments, such as the farewell to the Bidens following Trump’s intense speech, Melania’s body language conveyed clear signals.
Biden’s gesture of an arm around her waist was met with a brief turn towards her husband, maintaining her hat’s position. When Trump engaged with Biden in a handshake, Melania put an arm around her husband, offering reassurance.
Even with a stunning outfit, it seems Melania may have faced challenges in obtaining her preferred ensemble. Women’s Wear Daily polled 16 designers regarding their willingness to dress the First Lady, finding somewhat limited interest.

Among the designers contacted were Michael Kors, Diotima’s Rachel Scott, Zankov’s Sergio Hudson, and House of Gilles. None were eager to engage with Melania, perhaps due to previous public refusals by designers like Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Jason Wu during Trump’s initial term.
Hervรฉ Pierre, a French designer with a history of working with Melania, mentioned the difficulty some designers had in associating with the Trumps.
“The fashion world isn’t always welcoming to Trump-related projects,” he stated, explaining that despite some open-minded designers willing to seize such an opportunity, many are not.
Pierre recounted how his association with the Trumps had personal repercussions when he was told he was unwelcome at a New York City designer’s store.
“While criticism towards Mrs. Trump is understood, being denied service while shopping was unexpected,” Pierre said.
He emphasized how certain designers, particularly in Europe, saw working with Melania as a business opportunity due to the publicity she garners.
Judi James noted an increase in Melania Trump’s “power signals” and described her warm demeanor as indicative of “relaxed confidence.”
“Leaving the service, Donald and Melania displayed their unity by holding hands more prominently, with Donald lifting their clasped hands as if showcasing his pride and care for Melania as they headed to their car,” James told the Mirror.
Although Donald maintained his usual serious expression resembling his official portrait, Melania contrasted this with a broad smile adding a celebratory touch to the event.
Melania shared that she felt more prepared for her role in the White House this time, hinting at potential changes in her approach. Body language expert Inbaal Honigman observed a distinct difference in her demeanor compared to 2017’s inauguration.
“Melania’s body language now appears still and neutral, maintaining a poised posture without drawing attention away from her husband,” Inbaal shared with the Express.
Inbaal also commented on her improved warmth, saying, “Back in 2017, Melania was more inclined to wave and smile, showing friendliness to the crowds. However, her neutral face, often criticized for short-lived smiles, was now concealed beneath a wide-brimmed hat, allowing a composed expression.”
Indeed, her hat became a focal point throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors. Designed by Eric Javits, who expressed pride in dressing Melania, the hat was praised for complementing her elegant bone structure and style.

Javits said, “My artistic background allowed me to design hats that harmonize and enhance various facial features. Melania’s natural beauty needed little assistance.”
An amusing anecdote followed, with Donald quipping about Melania nearly being lifted off the ground by the wind when standing by a military helicopter, drawing laughter from the audience.
Melania completed her inauguration look with a navy silk wool coat, matching skirt, and ivory silk crepe blouse by American designer Adam Lippes.
Lippes remarked on the occasion, “The inauguration reflects American democracy’s grandeur, and I’m honored to have dressed Mrs. Trump. Her attire showcases America’s finest craftsmanship.”
Despite the success of the day’s events, social media buzzed with comments on Melania’s hat, with some suggesting it appeared funeral-like, sparking humorous remarks.
As Donald and Melania navigate their second stay at the executive residence, they face changes, especially with Barron Trump starting college at New York University, though he remains welcome for visits, Melania told Fox, reflecting on the process of raising and then allowing children independence.
