In a recent interview with Australia’s Today show, Denzel Washington dropped a bombshell announcement – he’s retiring from Hollywood. This news comes as a shock to many, especially considering his recent announcement of upcoming projects.
At the age of 69, Washington reveals that he doesn’t anticipate making many more films in the future.
One of his final projects includes reprising his role as Othello, a character he first portrayed at the young age of 22. “I will be performing Othello at the age of 70,” the two-time Academy Award winner shared. It’s a fitting choice for his farewell to the silver screen.

In addition to Othello, Washington hinted at potential collaborations with renowned directors Ryan Coogler and Steve McQueen. He teased that after these projects, he will retire, also mentioning ventures like King Lear. Washington’s career took off in 1977 with the TV movie Wilma, and he made his feature film debut in 1981 with Carbon Copy.
Throughout the years, Washington has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected and talented actors. His iconic roles in films like Malcolm X, Training Day, and Glory have solidified his status as a celebrated performer.
His work continues to showcase his immense talent and passion, which has garnered him numerous awards and accolades.
Interestingly, earlier this year, Washington expressed his desire to be a part of Gladiator II. However, he emphasized that he must be inspired by the filmmaker, as there aren’t many films left that pique his interest.
Denzel Washington’s retirement marks the end of an era in Hollywood. As fans, we can look forward to cherishing his past work and anticipating his final projects.
